Smart Response is a first-of-its-kind generative AI solution to revolutionize the risk and diligence process. This feature enhances a responding team's ability in the assessment completion process by automatically applying answers from previously completed assessments, Answer Library, and AI-generated, and related documents.
Smart Response automatically delivers precise answers, as well as the rationale and referenced resources for each generated answer. Feedback on the generated response and rationale can then be provided to help improve the accuracy of answers.
Once enabled for your organization, Smart Response will only be accessible by users with the specific Smart Response permission enabled. Please see our full help article on Smart Response permissions for your reference:

Navigating to an Active Assessment
Navigate to the Portal Assessments Module, Active Assessments screen, and select an active assessment as shown below.
Run Smart Response
-
From an Assessment Answering Screen, click the Auto Answering button as shown below. Click on the Arrow Button for Generate answers from your content as displayed below.
-
If the questionnaire has at least one already-answered question — whether from a prior manual answer, a data import, or a previous Smart Response run — a question selection window opens next. Choose one of two options: Unanswered questions only (selected by default) or All questions. If you choose All questions, any answers previously entered will be overwritten. Click Next to continue.
- Next, from the source selection window, choose where Smart Response should pull answers from.
- Answer Library is enabled by default via a toggle switch; while enabled, an Add filters option is available and uses the same filter functionality as the Answer Library elsewhere on the platform.
-
Supporting Document(s) can be added using the existing + Add Files option (see Select Documents below) or from SharePoint.
-
Depending on which source(s) you selected, a methodology option appears in the same window:
- If Answer Library is your only source, a checkbox for Generate AI answers when no Answer Library match is found is checked by default. Leave it checked so Smart Response fills any remaining gaps with an AI-generated answer after applying Answer Library matches, or uncheck it so only Answer Library matches are applied and unmatched questions are left unanswered.
- If Supporting Document(s) is your only source, choose one of two radio options: Generate AI answers (selected by default and labeled as recommended) to have AI generate answers from your document text, or Use exact document text to apply verbatim matches from the documents instead.
- If you selected both sources, Answer Library matches are always applied first; verbatim document matching is applied next if you chose it; and AI generation (from Answer Library and/or document context, per what you enabled) fills any remaining gaps last.
- Whenever both AI-generation options are enabled together, a disclaimer appears explaining that AI-generated answers may draw on the Answer Library, your documents, or both as context.
Click on the Run Smart Response button to continue and generate answers.
-
The Smart Response Window will prompt you to return to the Active Assessments Screen while Smart Response generates. Click on the Back to Assessments button to do so. You will see a Padlock icon next to the assessment in the Active Assessments tableview. While Smart Response is running, the progress heading now reads "Populating Answers with Smart Responses" and the questionnaire banner and question-level status both read "Populating Smart Responses" (previously "Generating Smart Responses" in both places) — this is a wording change only, with no change to the underlying behavior.
Select Documents
From the source selection window (see above), you may upload documents for the AI to extract data from by clicking the + Add Files option, or by adding them from SharePoint.
From the Add Documents Window, drag & drop files from the Upload Files Screen.
Note: Currently, only .pdf, .docx, .xlsx files are supported to source Smart Response. For more information on uploading files to assessments, please see our help article below:
Share Documents
You have the option to attach the uploaded documents to the assessment, making them viewable by the evaluator.
To do so, click on the Share Toggle Switch for the respective documents, as shown below.
Viewing Smart Response
Once a Smart Response generation is complete, answers generated from strong Q&A record matches will automatically be populated in the answer box. Any additional AI-generated suggested answers along with their rationale can be reviewed and applied as well. Answers will indicate whether they were sourced from a string Q&A record match or AI-generated.
-
From an Assessment Answering Screen, answers populated from strong Q&A record matches will be populated in the answer box and be indicated by the Answer Library Match banner as shown below. Users can review the match within the Answer Library by clicking the View in Answer Library button.
Note: Smart Response will prioritize populating an answer from the Answer Library. However, if a strong Q&A record match is not detected for a question or you are not satisfied by an existing one, you have the ability to view suggested AI-generated answers and apply them. The rationale for the suggested answers can also be reviewed.
-
From the Assessment Answering Screen, you can view and apply suggested answers populated by Smart Response by clicking the Suggestions bar, and selecting a suggested answer as shown below.
-
The selected suggested answer will populate in the question card and be indicated by the AI-generated banner as shown below.
Note: If the Verbatim checkbox button was selected when running Smart Response, our platform will display this banner as AI Generated (Verbatim).
To view sources of the AI-generated answer, click the View Sources button.
Clearing Answers
Once Smart Response has been run and the assessment has been populated by responses, users have the option to clear their answers.
For more information on clearing answers, please review our full article on this here:
Viewing References
Users have the ability to view the references for each AI-generated response, gaining more insight on which resources were utilized in the generation of the suggestions.
Within a question card, click on View Suggestions and then View References. This will display a summary of the reference along with its source.
